I teach at a high school that was named a 2008 North Carolina Honor School of Excellence based on the state's standards. I am always looking for ways to engage my students and raise our environmental awareness. Ours is a very high performing school which just so happens to be luckily located by the Bogue Sound, a body of water connected to the Atlantic Ocean, and connected to a large national forest. What a great environment in which to explore, learn and grow. As a teacher, I would like to facilitate being safely outside with some of our environmental activities. In essence, I would like to create an outdoor learning space or area. I would like to begin with two portable tents that can be placed in the areas in which we are working. With a tent, students can gather in the rain, protect themselves from the wind and shield themselves from the sun. The tents will serve as our "home base" area. Having the tents on campus would be ideal; I predict 2 large easy to set-up tents can have a dual effect; they will be available to serve as a temporary shelter on our athletic fields. We can use them when having special events, like homecoming or when we have special fundraising events like Relay for Life, the ALS Walk, or our special picnics in the spring. Eventually, I would like to build a more permanent structure on our campus and continue to use the tents in the similar manner. Won't you consider funding this project?
