I am a first grade teacher with 25 wonderful first graders who come from a low income area.

Did you ever have a favorite book as a child that you loved so much that you wanted to read it over and over? My dilemma is how to get my students interested in reading. The solution is to provide them with reading materials that are so special to them, they will want to read them over and over.

One sure way I have found to do this is to give them books to read about themselves! I love to take pictures of my students going about their daily routine, or doing special projects, and then putting the pictures into a PowerPoint with simple, familiar, or repetitive text. For example, I take the familiar rhyme "Here we go Round the Mulberry Bush" and substitute the words "This is the way we do our math, do our math, do our math. This is the way we do our math so early in the morning." This becomes the first page of our book. I add pictures of students doing different first grade activities, and we have a book we can all read! We view the slide shows on our computer and read them over and over. I can also upload them to my website for parents and children to share at home. The slide shows are then printed and bound into books that go into our classroom library for all students to read. They love to see themselves in these books. They will read them over and over.

Having a digital camera that I can keep at school will ensure that I have a camera handy when I need to capture just the right moments to include in our latest book. Giving to this project will help motivate my students to become better readers by providing interesting materials students can read about themselves.
