This past year I experienced my first 7th and 8th grade Language Arts special education teaching year. Many of my students also are first generation citizens as their parents have immigrated from Asia for a chance at a better life.

As an educator at this level I am sad to see kids “turned off” by reading as they struggle to decode the words and then make sense of the whole texts, as most fiction and nonfiction books at this level are text heavy. As I have desperately searched for stories, books, magazines my students have pointed me to some of the highest interest materials around: graphic novels.

In this highly visual world just about anything with pictures captures our student’s imagination, from the highly graphic Internet to movies to video games. I see students less and less interested in traditional text and moving towards novels, such as the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, which support their understanding with visuals. Graphic novels take the whole storytelling format one step further than traditional texts and basic comic strips. Artists and writers create longer tales, ranging from 50 to over 300 pages, using all the trademark comics pieces, from text bubbles to panels. As with comic books, they are often quite complex in terms of text, artwork, and the look of the pages get more adventurous. These novels are more than the Calvin and Hobbs type of books, they aren’t simple joke strips—they tell stories! I made a point to buy every graphic novel from Scholastic book orders last year and I came away with some great books that kids really devoured.

However, I noticed that the books lacked continuity—there were very few that had a second or third book to move onto, two big exceptions from Scholastic were Maus (both I and II) by Art Spiegelman and the Bone series by Jeff Smith. My students are desperate for more! As I began to search for titles and series I found that the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), has published a list of the year’s best graphic novels since 2007. These novels are rich with text that is enhanced by the graphics which lend to student understanding. I would like to increase the graphic novel library I have started in my classroom by increasing the quantity and quality of works available for students.
