"Have you ever stayed home from school for fear of being shot? Many of my students have lived with that fear for most of their lives. I serve high school students from more than 20 countries, many of whom are refugees from Africa, Cuba, and Eastern Europe. They are so grateful to be in a country where they enjoy a safe, secure school environment and are free to get an education without fearing for their lives. You have never seen a more eager group of teenagers! Almost all of our international students come from very low income families and many of them have little or no exposure to the English language outside of the classroom. Most come from single parent homes and many have lost one or both parents in civil wars in their native countries. Unfortunately, our district is financially strapped and we are not always able to provide the children with materials to take home to study. Being able to buy bilingual and picture dictionaries that we could loan to the students would not only help them succeed in ESL but also to have even greater success in their regular ed classes. (Imagine trying to take classes in a foreign country without so much as a dictionary to help you translate!) These students have overcome so many obstacles to get here. It is within your power to help them overcome the last barrier they face... the English language! Thank you so much for helping them achieve their true potential.
My students need 20 Spanish/English dictionaries and single copies of 11 different bilingual dictionaries, covering languages including Chinese, Swahili, Arabic, French and Hindi.

Dear *, Doug and MaryAnn, Janet, Paul and Sharon,
I just can't thank you enough for your kind and gracious support for this project. We have some wonderful international students who have come from such difficult circumstances. It is just such a joy to be able to provide them with resources that will help them succeed in and out of the classroom. Thank you for being partners with us in their learning experience. You have each helped to improve the lives of some very deserving and very appreciative children. I can't wait to share these materials with the students and to enrich their language learning experiences. Thank you so very much! With gratitude, Ms. H.

"Dear Ms. H, About 100 years ago my grandfather escaped his country, and came to America. He worked hard, and provided for his family & others. When I look at all of his great grandchildren & see how well they are doing - all because he had the courage to escape and do well in his new land - I smile. I wish the best for your students. Take Care, Sharon"
