The Legend Lives on from the Chippewa on Down

My students need 4 copies of five books about the legends surrounding Michigan and the Great Lakes by Kathy-Jo Wargin and 5 books about Michigan lighthouses.

Many are first generation Americans. I utilize interpreters speaking three different languages to communicate with my parents. All of my students are considered high risk living well below the poverty level.

My students have become fascinated with the art work of Gijbert VanFrankenhuyzen. Gijbert (known to the students as Nick) and his wife spent two days at our school showing students how they create children's books. The children were extremely enamored with Nick. He taught them how to begin creating illustrations, guiding them through the process and encouraging them all to believe they could draw.

My initial intention is to introduce the books illustrated by Nick to peak the students interest, then utilize these books as part of our study of Michigan. We will be exploring the Native Americans of our state and their contributions to the culture, history and development of the region. The focus of this particular project will revolve around the legends surrounding the Great Lakes, which will be explored in the books written by Kathy-Jo Wargin and illustrated by Nick VanFrankenhuyzen...such as "The Legend of Mackinaw Island" , "The Legend of the Petoskey Stone", and "The Legend of the Sleeping Bear". After exploring the Native American connection, we will turn to the commercial and historical aspects of the Great Lakes - learning about the history, function and location of Michigan lighthouses, as well as, the ships which traveled the Great Lakes and shipwrecks sitting at the bottom of them. So here we will explore books about lighthouses and the story "The Edmund Fitzgerald" also written by Kathy-Jo Wargin revolving around the sinking of the ship on Lake Superior.

My goal is to make this a memorable experience. So along with integrating literature we will be creating watercolor drawings of lighthouses and pastel renditions of the Great Lakes. These learning experiences wouldn't be available to my students outside of the school environment, as many parents don't have the resources to travel around Michigan, nor do they read English, so they wouldn't be sharing the books with their children.
