I currently teach about thirty 4th graders at a Title 1 (low income) school in Louisiana. My class is an inclusion class comprised of special education, ESL, and regular education students. This is their first year in a middle school and they will be taking a high stakes standardized test in the spring. If they fail this test (either English Language Arts or Math), they will have to repeat the 4th grade! I have my work cut out for me, but I am so excited for this opportunity!

Because I have such a wonderful mix of students, I also have a wide variety of abilities. Although they are all in the 4th grade, most of them are not functioning at the 4th grade level. I have many students working above the 4th grade level, and many working below. I find it challenging every day to try to meet their unique needs, and feel like I could use a little help.

I have selected some books for practicing ELA skills such as reading and grammar on a daily basis. Instead of just giving every student a copy of the 4th grade books, I have selected books ranging from 1st through 6th grade levels, allowing my students to practice skills at their current level of functioning. These particular books contain reproducible activities for every day of the school year. The activities can be done independently (such as for early finishers), yet they strengthen necessary English Language Arts skills. My plan is to create folders for every student in the class. The folders will contain the reproducible activities from the books and will be switched out every week. Each student may end up with completely unique work, based on their ability. Because I will base the work on each students' ability, EVERY student will work at his/her level and will be successful!

Please help me fully differentiate my teaching and reach EVERY student in my class. These books can and will be used for years and years to come.
