Analyzing Malcolm X's Autobiography

My students need 30 copies of the "Autobiography of Malcolm X" in order to analyze issues in the Civil Rights movement.

"The Autobiography of Malcolm X" is a powerful narrative about changing one's life and changing the world. It is a journey through race issues in American society that is still deeply relevant to millions of high school students, like mine, in America today. I am a 14-year history teacher. The class I am getting a set of books for is my US History II class. My school has over 3000 students, and is about 70% free & reduced lunch status.

My students are a class of 30, in a school of over 3000 students. Our community is an urban one, with about half of the adult population without a high school diploma. Our school faces a $1.4 million dollar shortfall already in this fiscal year. Our unemployment rate is twice the state's average. My students are street-smart, but many have a poor appreciation or understanding for the power of a good education. Our school system has many dysfunctional elements, like a low teacher-retention rate and a low attendance rate. We are listed as chronically underperforming by the state and are in the process of restructuring the school. I am the chair of that effort.

Reading "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" as a class, with reflective journal writing, blogging, essay and RAFT (role, audience, format, topic) writing assignments will help students in similar circumstances understand not only issues of race, economics, politics, and more, but also how they can change their world. Reading this book will also lead students to find heroes and leaders in their own life.

I understand that, in tough economic times, it is difficult to ask for support. I cannot make promises that a set of books will change my student's lives, but I can say that high expectations matched by care, structure and resources, can make a difference in turning a student around. I do love my job and deeply respect my students, even though I teach in a very difficult school. Knowing that someone else wants them to succeed makes a huge difference to inner-city students. Thanks!
