Mandeville, LA Grades 3-5

I currently teach a self-contained classroom of fourth grade students in a public school. I am responsible for all core subject areas including technology driven activities. Our district's goal this year is to educate students in the necessary tools needed for the 21st century learner.

My students this year are very technology savvy- they enjoy working on projects that involve the computer, Internet, or any type of software. I have three working student computers however, one is outdated which makes it difficult to complete projects due to its limited capabilities. Most of the media projects today are large in size which fills up the computer space available. With 24 students, it won't take long before the space on the hard drive is used up. I want to provide my students with the resources to complete their own electronic portfolio which will capture what learning means to them in their eyes. If this project is funded, the students will not only learn how to scan their work, but save it, edit it, and burn it onto a DVD. These are essentials skills our students need for their own future. I want to capture their interest and their excitement in technology from both a personal and professional manner.

In my classroom right now I have two computers that are approximately three years old and one computer that is approximately nine years old. The students need more space to store their work as they learn to organize their learning in an electronic portfolio. The computer units that we have in the classroom have the least amount of space available possible which limits us to completing amazing digital activities. With the purchase of an external hard drive the students can store their work that they scan on there eliminating any space problems. Once the students have completed scanning their work throughout the year in all core subjects areas including art, they will have the opportunity with a DVD burner to copy their work on something a little more permanent. This project will benefit my students by allowing them to be responsible for their own work which encourages them to produce better quality. My students live in a technology driven world, it's important that they have the resources of the 21st century. If this project is funded, this will serve not only this class of students but also a few more years worth before newer technology resources are available.

Your gracious assistance will provide many students for a few years the opportunity to capture their own learning through the digital eye.
