Warning: Students Reading to Learn! Enter classroom at your own risk! I teach second grade at a brand new school with no money! It is a wonderful school with great ideas and plans, however we are still building our foundation. We have beautiful classrooms that are slowly being equipped with 21st century learning tools and resources. Since we are just beginning our educational endevaor we are lacking the appropriate reading materials to effectively foster a 21st century learner.

Unfortunately our new school was near completion when the economic crisis hit hard. The state of North Carolina took a hard hit and it slowly has trickled down to public education. I have been told from our superintendent that we have to do more with less. The money is just not there to order supplies (including paper and toner for copiers throughout the district). Since teacher assistants have been let go due to the state budget crisis, teachers are having to share assistants with another teacher and some grade levels are sharing one teacher assistant. Therefore, my teacher assistant is in my class for about an hour and half of instructional time. It is very difficult to foster reading centers with myself and 22 students (5 multilevel reading groups/centers) in one day. I am lucky to meet with three out of the five for the day. Our reading program has limited multilevel books and I am finding myself purchasing book sets to supplement the reading program. I also feel that our reading program is outdated and not sufficient enough to prepare a 21st century learner.

My students need updated reading resources so they can succeed in second grade. The booklets I have chosen for my project will promote the essential English Language Arts curriculum. I teach in a math, technology, science magnet school and need nonfiction book sets to strengthen fluency, comprehension and nonfiction retelling. Students will also enjoy the fiction booklets as well. Every product I picked will help my students who are reading to learn.

Students want to know everything about anything. They want to research and explore more and more. I want to be able to use updated, science and social studies based reading instruction. Integration of the subjects is crucial in today's classroom. There are not enough hours in the day to teach every subject separately. By funding this project you will engage a learner and a classroom of students who are reading to learn!
