My students need 1 copy each of 6 book sets, including a Jean Fritz collection and Social Studies theme sets of Pioneer Life, Immigration and the Holocaust.

I teach in a high poverty school in rural South Carolina. This year's district focus in on Balanced Literacy. My fifth graders need to learn to read as well as learn about American History. What better way to incorporate a balance between reading and Social Studies than to read about the topics in a novel instead of just the textbook!

Balanced Literacy has students reading at their own level in books that are "Just Right" for them- not too hard and not too easy. However, since we also need to learn about American History, we need novels on certain topics as well. We just don't have those topics at the school. We would like to have some books about the Westward Expansion, Immigration, the Holocaust, and American History past the 1860's.

We need books at different reading levels that revolve around these topics. This way everyone will be reading at his "just right" level, but also be able to give input about the same topics.

Your help will make it possible for my students to feel successful in reading and in social studies. Help us learn through our past history by letting us read about it.
