"The Simplest Things Make a BIG Difference.

I teach in North Carolina and work with high school students pursuing a high school diploma through the Occupational Course of Study. This course of study is not intended for students who are college-bound, but for those who will enter the world of work right after high school.

Part of the Occupational Course of Study curriculum requires students to learn about personal hygiene, safety in the home environment, cooking and making meals, temperature and other skills that most people take for granted or don't have difficulty learning. My students learn most of these skills through books, handouts and games, but they also need to have direct hands-on contact with these concepts to understand them better. To most of my students, showing them how to do something will mean nothing unless they do it themselves --with lots of supervision of course.

In order for me to make the teaching of these cooking and personal hygiene more meaningful and relevant to my students, I need access to an electrical toaster oven, small enough that I can store it after use, but spacious enough to cook more in less time, and I need to have access to appropriate tangibles to teach, show and assess my students about personal hygiene. Since these skills are part of what I teach, I will use class time to cook with my students and to practice good hygiene habits. For most of my students, I -as their teacher- am their resource for finding solutions to these kinds of obstacles as there isn't always an adult available to help them with these things at home.

Your contribution will allow us to use a real-life device for cooking real food, not just to pretend-play. It will also allow me to make teaching safety when cooking and personal hygiene more interesting and fun for my students, instead of simply using handouts, look-alike manipulatives, or abstract examples. We have been wanting to find an electrical toaster oven for our cooking activities for a while now. This is our opportunity! And even though my students don't like to talk about or show me good hygiene habits, with this kit practicing such skill will become less embarrassing and more exciting to them -and to me. You can make these practices become the real-deal for my students as they will practice these skills with actual tools -just as seen and used by regular people. Thank you.

My students need one electrical toaster oven for cooking essential meals and one hygiene kit to learn about personal care.

Dear Trisha,

There are no words to describe my excitement about obtaining these teaching materials and to accurately describe my gratitude for your generosity. I am surprised, thrilled and so happy at the same time to finally be able to have these items in my classroom. I can't wait to put them to use.

My students are going to be so excited to see an electrical toaster oven in the classroom. We will put them to good and delicious use. The Hygiene Training Kit will make learning about personal hygiene so much more meaningful and realistic to my students; it is a difficult topic to discuss with them at times, but with the aids contained in this kit talking about hygiene will be easier for them and for me.

It brings me a great sense of warmth and relief to know that there are people like you who believe how meaningful the simplest things can be to a child. Knowing about basic skills such as cooking and personal hygiene is so important to my students, especially when they are getting ready to live on their own (they will not always have someone nearby who will help them with these things).

Thank you again for your donations.

With gratitude,
Ms. B.
