Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work at a small, multi-cultural charter school in California. Over the years, our population of English Language learners has increased significantly. This year, about thirty percent of our students are English Language Learners. One challenge English Language Learners face is the loss of their primary language once they enter school. Many students enter school with a high speaking vocabulary in their home language, and after time their home language is replaced by English. This is troublesome for students, because after a few years, while students have acquired some vocabulary in English, their level is not on par with English-speaking students. At the same time, the language they speak at home has not developed either, so a child is left with two languages that they speak at a less-than-fluent level. Research has shown that English Language Learners actually succeed more in English when they have high levels of literacy in their home language. Here is an example: Imagine that in third grade, students are learning about animals and the environments they live in. An English Language Learner needs to learn not only the subject matter about the animal their environments, they also have to learn the words. If a student has read in their home language about the different kind of environments at home, when they get to school, they can transfer their knowledge to English. They will already have some background knowledge about a subject. The same can apply to other concepts such as colors, numbers, shapes, plot, character, adjectives, adverbs, etc. We would like to encourage families to read in their home language at home (in addition to English). We have started sending books home once a week to students to read in their home language and practice with their families. After students practice at home, they bring the books back to school and spend about 15 minutes reading with a "Reading Buddy" in a different grade. We hope that their families will feel validated by having their home culture and language acknowledged at school, and in turn seek out more opportunities to enrich their child’s literacy in their home language. This proposal is only a one component of the program we are implementing for English Language Learners at our school. We have invested much time in professional development to learn how to reach the unique needs of these students in our classroom. I hope you will feel inspired to help with this small, but hopefully not inconsequential piece in helping our English Language Learners succeed. The collection of books I selected in English/Vietnamese and English/Spanish is hopefully the beginning of a larger move towards bilingualism and bi-literacy.
