"I'm a 6th grade teacher of all subjects where the community is extremely diverse. Due to constant expansion, many students are in portable classrooms like mine. Although segments of our district are not considered to be in as high of need, these students in the "learning cottages" most certainly are. 65% qualify for free or reduced lunch, approximately 50% did not meet state standards in either Language Arts or Mathematics last year, and 42% receive special services of some nature. Most importantly, these classrooms have not received new technology since it has become a Middle School. Currently we have one refurbished computer in the classroom in terms of technology. The Emerald Team's students want to be 21st century learners, however many obstacles stand in their way. They have begun their quest for knowledge, and now they are seeking assistance in their journey. They were successful in finding teachers with *heart* that care about motivating them to learn. These same teachers have the *brains* to know how to use technology to enrich their learning experience, and the *courage* to ask for help when others won't. If we had an Elmo Multimedia Projector portable document camera, we could enrich our students' learning experience daily. As educators, it will allow us to tap into our creativity, and give our students the best possible education using methods that they have seen in previous schools and will be exposed to in the real world. It will allow us to use differentiated instruction with students while addressing many different learning styles. They will be able to create presentations utilizing the technology to turnkey their knowledge to their peers. Although 40 students will initially use the equipment, our goal is for it to be shared with the entire team of approximately 120 students. The bright lights of both the projection of multimedia lessons and in their minds will make the Emerald team feel that there truly is no place like school! "Back where I come from there are men who do nothing all day but good deeds. They are called phila... er, phila... er, yes, er, Good Deed Doers." ~ The Wizard of Oz
We truly hope that walking through the Emerald gates will lead us onto many exciting educational journeys. Only you can help make this possible. These students are one step away from High School, which in turn means that they are simply two steps away from the real world. Our goal is to expose them to as much technology, positive learning experiences, and educational resources as we can. Instead of just textbooks, your kindness and generosity will enable them to see that there truly is more out there than just their own backyard.
