Reading is torture for many of my students. I teach high school English, grades 10-12, to students with mild learning disabilities that need to pass an exit exam in order to graduate. I am constantly looking for creative ways to keep them engaged in the reading of required literature. They often tell me they find the material boring and irrelevant to their future success after high school.

The majority of my students have mild to moderate ADHD. It is extremely difficult to get them to engage in reading without having their minds wander. Also, they have a need for constant movement and will often tap their feet, fingers, or pencils. The noise this creates adds a further distraction to their already wandering minds.

Studies have shown that sitting on exercise balls while reading helps the brain to remain focused. It also provides an outlet for the need for movement in a distraction free manner. There is also the added benefit of increased back and abdomen strength and improved posture. Currently I have one exercise ball for a classroom that averages 11 students per period. I need 10 more of varied sized to ensure equal access for all students.

Your help will ensure that my students with ADHD can access the curriculum without first having to satisfy their need for movement. The increased blood-flow to their brains will help them to remain focused while reading. Since reading is the key to their passing the exit exam in order to graduate, your help will directly increase the chances for success of over 55 young adults with learning disabilities.
