Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We aim to fly high! This 8th grade Earth Space Science class is located in the fourth largest school district in the United States. This school, built in 1962, has a high percentage (45%) of students who are on the federally-funded free lunch program. It is a diverse student population in a large middle school setting (1375+ students.) My classes are highly motivated by hands-on projects. While imagination and creativity is unlimited, funding for programs is very limited.

The purpose of this project is to integrate technology with traditional teaching in the classroom. Students will use a variety of media (rockets, model airplanes, computers, Internet access) to design and successfully implement projects as they relate to the study of aerospace science. Funding for this project will provide materials that greatly enhance existing equipment and the learning experience. My students are only limited by the funding we have for our science program. Although we collect fees, the funds are limited and allocated to specific lab activities.

With funding, we will launch into learning about the U.S. Space Program. We will work on lessons that integrate history, math, and science. Students will design, build and evaluate rocket models as part of comprehensive unit designed to study the physics of flight. Space science is best learned and appreciated using visuals and concrete learning experiences. Students will be immersed in the field of aerospace technology using hands-on labs, student created projects and use of the Internet to research and obtain current information on the topics being taught. Students will explore the history of flight, Bernoulli’s principles, Newton’s laws, as they apply to rockets, the space race of the 1960s and the development of the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA). They will evaluate their flight using mathematical formulas to calculate height, distance and time of flight. Students will generate graphs for acceleration, distance and time of flight. My students will be able to evaluate the forces of drag, lift, thrust and gravity as they affect the flight trajectory of their models. Students will create a portfolio with digital images of their completed rocket models and lab report.

Funding will provide the needed equipment to complement the text in use and the lessons being taught in class. The equipment will allow students to be immersed in activities that will motivate their interest in aerospace science. Funds will be used to purchase model rockets, a launcher, an altimeter to measure launch height, and a digital camera for classroom use. Students will work through the design cycle to plan, build, fly and analyze the flight of their craft. This project was previously done at my former school. I was able to watch my students light up as they lit up their rockets. It brings them a great sense of pride and accomplishment to see their work “take off”. I would be privileged to bring this experience to my students at my new school. My students are very motivated and we are “Go for launch!”
