Our kids are "at-risk" for a variety of reasons, but the most common reason is poverty; our free/ reduced lunch rate is among the highest in the state.
Still, for the past two years we have enjoyed defying the "at-risk" label by having our kids read Shakespeare. After they read a play, we take a group down to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to see it performed by a world-class troupe. It would be impossible for me to convey in words how enriching this experience can be for these groups of young men and women.
This year, it is going to be hard to offer this opportunity; budgets here, like school budgets everywhere, have been slashed. And trips outside of the building are among the first budget items on the chopping block. It is hard to justify the expense when money for new texts has been eliminated.
But I believe that seeing a Shakespeare play performed can be as important in literacy education as a new set of text books. Shakespeare was written to be seen, and often must be seen to be understood.
We must continue to expand the horizons of kids even in times of recession. This is not a frill, this is a necessity.
Please help me help the next generation of kids cultivate literacy, explore the world outside of their neighborhoods, and appreciate the works of the Bard! HIDE My students need a class trip to see Hamlet at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Requested are the ticket costs.
