We teach 60 energetic and enthusiastic second and third grade students in Indiana. Throughout the day, our students engage in whole and small group activities in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.

They especially enjoy small group or individual activities. Small group activity time allows us to individualize our instruction while also allowing students to practice a specific skill already learned, or engage in a new task given by the teacher.

To facilitate more small group time, our students would benefit from using six MP3 players. The students will be able to use the devices for spelling, social studies, reading, writing, math, and physical education. Some of the student uses of these devices include: • Listening to cardinal directions on the MP3 players and moving around the room to find specific items • Using the recording functionality of the devices to interview different school and community members throughout the year • Reading audibly and recording several stories throughout the year • Sharing their recordings with parents, teachers and other students, including reading buddies in other grades • Listening to books, poems, and plays while following along on their own paper version • Recording thoughts, observations and ideas for use with writing assignments later in the period • Listening to math facts and answering math questions orally or on paper. • Creating and recording various songs of math facts or concepts. • Listening to a recording of the teacher reading the questions on a test (for struggling students needing extra assistance during tests) • Listening, writing, and checking spelling words

These are just a few of the many things our students will be able to do with these devices to be lifelong learners, and meet state standards. Overall, the MP3 players will allow the struggling learners to get more practice and obtain verbal direction and help when the teacher is not available, as well as helping the higher learners to expand their competencies. By facilitating more interactive learning and enabling students to work more frequently in smaller groups, these devices will help our students achieve a higher level of success during the year. Your help will ensure that our students have this opportunity!
