My students have been surfing with broken equipment. Yes, inner city, lower income 7th grade students do surf...the internet at least. 23 12-13 year olds share a self contained classroom and four temperamental desktops.

My students often huddle around a 15 inch computer screen in our classroom to surf sites together. As an example, recently students read a selection about the food pyramid and healthy eating habits. They learned how diet can affect their learning habits, sleeping patterns as well as their mood. We took turns surfing a few websites suggested by the selection. Unfortunately, some students did not get the full experience, because we were relegated to rotating as small groups with the one computer that worked properly in class. Time ran out and students had to got to gym. We did not get the chance to have all students visit the sites nor did we visit all the suggested ones either.

I envision the classroom using the LCD projector to surf the site as a whole. Projecting the site on a larger screen and surfing it as a class would have afforded us an opportunity to include all students as well as visit several other sites. I'd also use the projector to display note taking strategies, class goal charts and data collection tables associated with upcoming science projects.

The technology we have in our classroom does allow students greater and more diverse learning scenario, but my 23 students share four computers which often fail to work so we end up using the one that is consistent. The projector and cart would give us the chance to keep our technological studies protected and in constant use. Your assistance would provide students with the proper equipment to surf in the city with style.
