Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This is a classroom that hosts 9th graders for geography and ELL students of all grade levels. The school itself is a high-poverty area: 85% are on free or reduced lunch, but as a school, we're very focused on ensuring that despite the odds, all of our students are college ready when they graduate, since even if they are unable to go to university, the reality is that the vast majority of jobs need people who posses the abilities of a college freshmen.

To make such a lofty goal possible, especially considering the level of the students as they enter high school, the language arts teacher and myself confer with the students individually and in small groups as much as possible. We constantly employ formative assessments to help our students ask themselves where they are now and where they are going in their learning. This type of teaching is much harder than just teaching from the book, especially in classes with 35 students; however, this type of approach to teaching shows solid results. (See research done by Paul Black and Dylan Williams).

The trick is to be able to record your conferences with the students in a way that you can guide them to an understanding and at the same time, record a history of their progress. Most teachers do this with a massive number of composition notebooks. The issue with this is that writing it by hand limits you, and it limits the students ability to access the conversation. OneNote is a part of the Office suite that could make this task much more effective. However, to run this program (which I can get readily via the district's site license), I need something small and portable that I can move about the classroom to type the conversations with. The netbook is a perfect solution. Their design has improved in such a way that they are ideal for the classroom and for this type of activity.

Being able to type and therefore share with the students our conferences, allows the students to tap into their growth as a learner. Your help will allow a population who would normally is overlooked, be more vested in the process of becoming more aware of the control they have over their future and aware of the ways they can improve the world around them. This small piece of technology allows us as teachers to more quickly and effectively differentiate our instruction for the student, to make them a stronger individual in society.
