We Want Our Voices Heard!!!

My students need 1 copy of each of the Alabama Camellia Children's Choice Book Award nominees for our school library.

I'm the media specialist at a small, rural K-8 school in Alabama. We serve approximately 275 students. Of these students, 59% participate in the free and reduced lunch program. Like so many others, our community is facing many economic challenges. On top of that, our Library Enhancement funding was completely cut from the education budget this year. This was a devastating blow for us because our students love to read and we are struggling to make sure that they have the books they need to keep them enthusiastic about reading! Every year our state nominates 10 books in three different age categories to be considered for the Alabama Camellia Children’s Choice Book Award. Students all over the state read the books and vote for their favorite choice in each age division. Our students love to read and look forward to reading the selections each year. However, this year with absolutely no money for new books we will not be able to purchase the books nominated. Our students will not be able to participate and will have no say in the books chosen. The books I am requesting for our school library are nominees for the Alabama Book Award. These titles are chosen by a set of criteria that includes being about Alabama or an Alabamian, or written by an Alabamian. They also introduce various cultures, avoid stereotypes, have well-developed characters and illustrations that enhance the story. Our teachers are able to use these factors to provide valuable learning opportunities for our students! We want our voices to be heard! Sadly, without your help to purchase this year's nominees that won't be possible. With your generous donation we will be able to read, evaluate and vote for our favorite book for the Alabama Book of the Year!
