"A whopping 99% of my students are either First Generation Americans or are Mexican immigrants. In addition, 100% of our student population receives free breakfast and lunch. This community is high-need because of the socio-economic status and the poverty that the students face. Many of these kids already feel hopeless and don't see the point of reading.
I teach 7th grade Language Arts. A great majority of my students are reading below grade level. In addition to teaching them English, they learn about reading strategies and how to become proficient readers and writers. The more reading and writing they do, the more proficient they become. When they find reading material that sparks their interest, great things start to happen! My students want to read books about their culture and their people. Schools and libraries have plenty of books about other cultures, but recently, many books written by Hispanic authors have been published. We live on the border of Mexico and the kids want to read material that they can relate to.
Our classroom is based on modeling. If we are planning on writing a memoir, we study several memoirs. The same goes for editorials, biographies, short stories, and poetry.
I know that my students will enjoy and connect reading about subjects they can connect to.
My dream is to help each student become life long learners and readers. THAT is the best gift I can given and with your help, you can too. My classroom desperately needs reference books, literature, and other materials that the First Generation Americans and Mexican Immigrants can relate to. Since 99% of my students fall into one of those categories, the resources I am asking for will be put to good use because they desperately need to see printed materials that are about their culture. Seeing a student's eyes light up because they finally "get it" is a beautiful thing. With your help, I am confident I can bring that moment to more students faces. Let's help these students live the American Dream by helping them become life-long learners.
My students need 91 Hispanic-themed books, including "Estrella's Quinceanera", "Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez" and "The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child".
The cost of this proposal is $1,098, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

Dear Ms Siegla, Lynn&Heather, Jared, Kenneth, Jennifer, John, Ross, Beverly, Jessie, alicia, Corrie, Nicole, CHisPA, Marylou, Cindy, Becca, Izzy, Kristi, Cassy, Kate, Kim, Aimee, violet, Elaine, 2nd period English!, HP and Anonymous Donors,
We've received our books that you helped to purchase. What a great gift! We've been so excited about looking through them and deciding which ones we are going to read first. The kids are happy to have relevant reading material. They are able to make personal connections to the books and have the background knowledge needed in order to be successful readers.
We will be conducting literature circles with the books. The students will be in groups of about 5 and will have mini-book club meetings. They will be able to have authentic discussions about what they are reading while working on their higher level critical thinking and questioning skills.
Words can't describe the happiness I saw on 65 students faces today, but a picture is worth a thousand words! Please look at the pictures I have posted of the kids using the materials. That way, you can feel the happiness too.

Wow! I can't believe how fast this was funded. It's because of donors who believe in literacy and believe that our students need relevant reading material. My students are really excited about this project. We have been discussing how people we don't even know can be so generous because they believe in learning opportunities. I can guarantee that we will be giving back to other projects on this website. Throughout my life, I have met people who have touched my life in various ways. Most of those people probably don't even realize that their actions, words, and gestures are carried around inside of my heart and soul. This experience is something I will never forget and please know that you've not only added enrichment through literature for many students, but you've added to their hearts and souls too. With gratitude, Mrs. F.
