Flipping for a Foreign Language

My students need 3 Flip Video camcorders to create video flash cards and create their end-of-unit performance assessments using the technology that will engage them most.

I'm an elementary Spanish teacher in South Carolina who is excited every day to have the opportunity to teach Spanish to students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.

In the elementary language program in my school, communication is the core goal. I use only Spanish to teach 245 students in grades 3-5 and try to create activities and learning scenarios which build their confidence in using the language. However, face-to-face communication is no longer the only means we have to interact with one another. My students are surrounded by video and technology outside of school but don’t have access to it in school where we can use it to make communicating with their classmates in Spanish more engaging and meaningful. Even though the main classrooms are equipped with an electronic white board, I have little access to kid-friendly video technology. The one video camera that we can check out from the media center is big and bulky, requires a special videotape, and is not usually available when I want my students to demonstrate their learning in a 21st-century style!

So, what’s the best solution? Flip video camcorders! These small cameras fit into little hands, are lightweight, easy to use, feature “point and shoot” technology, and have large clear buttons that will make using them simple for my 8, 9 and 10 year-old students. Having our own camcorders will allow my students to create video flashcards of unit vocabulary items when it fits into our curriculum and not when the school video camera might be charged and available. The students themselves will become the stars of our regular lessons as I use their video flashcards to enhance my instruction every day. And the Flip video camcorders will make it easier for students to practice their Spanish when I set up classroom centers to help differentiate instruction and address the needs of all my students. At the end of our units, students will be able to complete their performance assessments and tape them so that we can share them with each other and with parents via our class web site.

Your donation to this project will help my students become 21st century learners! You will make it possible for them to take a more active role in helping structure lessons and the language learning process and give them the opportunity to show what they have learned at the end of a unit in new and engaging ways!
