We Absolutely Need this Part-Time Diary

My students need 20 copies of "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," a novel by Sherman Alexie.

I am honored to work with a tremendous group of middle school scholars in our Gifted and Talented/Advanced language arts classes. This proposal is meant for my class of 7th graders and to support our Language Arts Department. In our high-need community, a new book is hard to come by. Within those books, it is also sometimes difficult to find stories that are easy for our diverse, high-poverty student population.

Many of my students enjoy reading, and are excitedly anticipating our first class novel. Others of my students are finding books uninteresting and include characters that they cannot relate to. I am hoping one of our class novels can bring the two groups together around a good story with interesting and sympathetic characters.

"The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" is Sherman Alexie's only young adult novel. When I first read the acclaimed story teller's semi-autobiographical book for teens, I was floored! This book is so perfect for all teens, but especially those in high-need communities. Alexie introduces students to Arnold Spirit. Spirit lives on a reservation, has had health problems, and is a member of an extremely poor family. He is also very smart and transfers to a school over 20 miles off of the reservation, where he awkwardly sticks out for both his race and class. The story takes us through his obstacles between his reservation and school communities, as well as the trials of poverty. It is a story that recounts a reality many of my students may face themselves. It also provides positive messaging about friendship, family, community, and education. This is all accomplished through humor, honesty, and even some tragedy.

As Language Arts scholars, my students and others in the school can not only practice reading, but find within this book a story they want to read. Such investment can motivate them in and outside of the classroom. Your help will ensure that my students have the opportunity to read Alexie's book. For the students who love reading, this will be a great way to keep them doing so in a classroom setting. Your donation, too, can serve to give a student who is less interested in reading a story that they can get excited about. Together, we can all learn a little more about reading, and a little more about ourselves and our community.
