Tulsa, OK Grades 6-8

I am honored to work with a tremendous group of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade scholars in our Gifted and Talented/Advanced language arts classes. There are three classes (one/grade) composing of 55 amazing individuals. This kind of class is the first of its kind at our middle school and is working to challenge our students in unique, motivating, and rewarding ways. In our high-need community, many of the scholars face difficult challenges at home. Besides this new, advanced environment providing a healthy academic challenge, I also want them to feel like it is a stable, safe place for them to be.

One of the biggest challenges for us is school supplies. Not all scholars can provide the materials that they need for class every day. A material that has been difficult for all students to acquire and bring every day is a binder dedicated to our class. The binder would hold vocabulary and grammar practice, reading logs, unit notes, and personalized plans for success. In an effort to enhance an atmosphere of stability and consistency, and to minimize the work they have to keep track of outside of class, I asked for students to try and bring a 2", 3-ring binder that we can keep in our classroom. In talking with scholars and parents, this was a difficult supply to provide.

Therefore, I am asking for a generous donation of 60 2", 3-ring black binders to accommodate students' needs in the class (extras are to accommodate new students and also to provide examples/models). I am also requesting a set of binder spines for labeling student names in a consistent manner. We plan to use these binders to compile our vocabulary and grammar practice, reading logs to meet our goal of reading 25 books this year, as well as individualized academic trackers and plans for success. I think the binders will be an important asset for my students in a number of ways. First, the uniform binder will be aesthetically consistent, and thus stabilizing. It will also be a central hub for much of the daily work the student has, and and easy way to keep track of that work in the classroom. Second, as the students will be building their binders throughout the year, they can see a valuable lesson in action. As they continue in school and eventually go to college, they need to have a strong sense of organization to stay on track. Finally, the binder will also contain individualized academic trackers and plans for success. This will also help them to feel more responsibility for their work.

A binder may not seem like an important tool, but it can be the supply that binds my scholars to the success I know they can have and that they deserve. Just because my students cannot provide such resources themselves does not mean they are not capable or deserving. Your support in providing this resource will acknowledge their success so far (for being in an advanced class), and encourage them to reach even greater heights. Stability, organization, and responsibility seems like the perfect recipe for them to exceed their potential this year. They may only be in middles school, but I'm hoping the lessons we learn this year will get them on track to college and beyond!
