Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

During the 09-10 school year I’m teaching literature and creative writing to a small but wonderful group of 10th grade gifted students. Our school is in a high need, low income area and money disappears fast around here. The school year is started and we still don’t have books for my students read in class. Despite this setback my students remain positive and eager to learn.

Since these students are gifted, some teachers simply pile more and more work on them to keep them occupied. We all know quantity does not replace quality and it is practices like that which has made learning such a chore for these students. They are at a critical age, an age where they are starting to make the decision on whether or not they want bother with school at all. They are brilliant students and it would be a shame to let them slip through the cracks. My class needs to be challenged like they never have been before, they need to wake up and truly engage in their education. Instead of reading books just to find the right answer, we need to start reading in order to find the right questions.

These texts were selected to challenge my gifted readers in a way they have never been challenged before. I want them to think outside the box and question EVERYTHING. They are unconventional, high interest texts meant to harness the creative and analytic potential in my classroom and change it to a force bent on changing the world. With these books we will look at super heroes and their social responsibilities; evil and the imprint it leaves on the world, and the delicate ecology of distant planets as well as the one we call home.
