Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are kindergarten through 5th grade. They are mostly Hispanic, mostly low income, and there isn't a lot of beauty in their world. They are also extremely creative, bright, and eager to learn and create.

Many of my students are 1st or 2nd generation Americans. They love school and when they leave at the end of the day, I sometimes shudder to think what awaits them. There are many bad elements in our neighborhood. I want them to have every tool they need to stay strong, resist the peer pressure they will soon face, and know there is a choice for them. Many of my students go on to middle school and don't have the self-esteem and knowledge to avoid joining a gang, dropping out of school, and making poor decisions. Many of them don't get the guidance they need at home. Our district is not a wealthy one. It's urban, poor, and sometimes very ugly. My budget is minuscule compared to the volume of students I teach. We recycle every scrap of paper for projects and we find resources in the oddest places.

With the supplies asked for, we are going to create masks and skeletons for the Day of the Dead. Already talking about it and showing the students some artwork and other things, I see their excitement and anticipation growing. It is so meaningful and emotional to them, because many of them have experienced the event in Mexico or in America. Day of the Dead is a celebration of life and these kids need to celebrate life. While creating art and learning about a cultural event my students use more of their minds in different ways. They learn to solve problems in an unconventional manner. This "thinking outside the box" is vital for children. The power of the arts never ceases to amaze me. I just wish we had the supplies to make some really awesome artwork to build their self-esteem and self-awareness.

You will be letting my students know there are people out there that want them to succeed, create, and feel good about themselves and who they are.
