Tell Me Your Story: A Veteran's History Video Project

My students need 4 pocket video cameras.

I teach K-8 Gifted and Talented students. My 5th-8th students participate in the Veteran's History Project sponsored by the Library of Congress. Veterans are videotaped and the video is sent to the Library of Congress to become part of the National Archives.

We are in our 5th year of interviewing veterans. Students have interviewed almost 50 veterans ranging from WWII to Iraqi Freedom. Our current recording equipment is becoming unreliable and worn. We almost lost one interview because of a defective camera. The interviews are a one shot opportunity. With school funds running thin, replacement cameras are far down the priority list.

The requested cameras are easy to use, inexpensive per camera and don't require cords to keep up with to download. These cameras download directly onto the computer through the USB on the camera. This is very cool technology for students to use. The cameras are also very low profile, so veterans being interviewed will quickly forget there is a camera between them and the students, allowing them to relax while the conversation takes place. The students will benefit because the equipment will be in their hands and they become the decision makers on editing the video. They are using current technology while learning about history from primary sources (the veterans). Can you think of a better way to learn? Hands-on and interactive, like the "book" jumped off the page and started telling the story instead of reading about it. Another benefit for students is the pride and confidence they gain after interacting with the veterans, while the veterans gain young new friends and feel wonderfully honored and appreciated!

You will put this new "hip" technology into young students' hands. The cameras will not only help them learn, but also help them make a difference in their world. How many 10-13 years old do you know that have contributed to the National Archives? These students want to make a difference, and from past student experiences, they know they can and will make a difference for future generations. The students will also make a difference in the lives of the veterans they interview. My favorite story is from one of our Vietnam veterans. He said he used to have bad dreams a lot, but after his interview, he said the dreams had almost stopped. With the new equipment, you will make it possible to keep this worthy project going without worrying about losing an interview to tired, well-used equipment.
