Future Accountants, Engineers and Architects Need Supplies

My students need 11 different Math materials and manipulatives, such as magnetic money, pretend coins and multilink cubes.

Second graders who are crazy about math are lacking supplies. I teach second grade in a high poverty school district in Vermont. We have just been identified as a school in need of math improvement, as we didn't make adequate yearly progress (AYP).

We as a district have been in a budget crisis and almost all of our supply money was taken from us in order to keep teachers in the schools. Our school is a learning institution that fosters children from grade K-5, and has just recently began a new math program. We do not have the supplies required to adequately teach the lessons outlined in the new math program.

The magnetic money, pretend coins, multilink cubes, mirrors, pattern blocks, a number line, and 100 charts that I have requested will make it possible for my students to partner up and share supplies and be able to use hands-on, real life experience to the math concepts taught in second grade. It is very difficult to teach about money if a child does not know what a penny looks like or feels like. A child cannot learn about the line of symmetry without actually looking into a mirror and seeing first hand what a simple mirror can do to a set of objects or shapes. These materials will make that happen for my kids.

Please help my class of eager second grade learners, who cheer for math time, obtain the proper math supplies to make math time a memorable and educational experience. Please help my students who someday might be accountants and architects to build a solid foundation to math in second grade.
