I teach in a birth to four-year-old program for children with special needs. Our children have varying degrees of disabilities that make them eligible to receive special education services. Most of the children have speech disorders, many of them do not talk yet. We also have children with physical disabilities which require physical and occupational therapy to help them learn to walk, feed, and move their bodies properly. It is a challenging, but very rewarding job.

The school I work in draws from a population that is disadvantaged. We are required to expose the children to various cultures including dress, music, literature, and food. Books and music I have, but the tactile things (toys for the children to play with and manipulate) I don't have access to.

Our program would greatly benefit from classroom toys that would promote an acceptance of different cultures. Having dress up from various cultures and play food would help children relate to other cultures more readily. Playing with dolls that depict various cultures would provide an opportunity for children to ask about the differences and give teachers the chance to discuss why people are different.

Your support would provide materials that my students will not be exposed to in any other setting in their lives. My students will have the opportunity to interact with different cultures in a way that most children their age are not able to do. It would make a world of difference to our early childhood special education program.
