Our fifth grade curriculum builds mountains and then erodes them away over hundreds of thousands of years.

Grasping this timely sequence and relating to the process is difficult for my students. Fifth graders think twenty years is a long time. Understanding how slow, gradual, and continuous mountain building is, requires numerous activities and a variety or approaches.

"Mountains" by Seymour Simon describes the process of building and wearing away mountains with interesting text and fantastic pictures that will grab the students' attention. It is also a powerful instructional tool for teaching reading strategies to use with non-fiction selections. Building comprehension skills is essential.

You will make it possible for my students to work cooperatively reading, discussing, and internalizing information about our changing Earth. Science is exciting when tools are available to capture the students' interest.
