"Eager and excited 4th graders are ready to become geologists! We have a high ELL population with very few resources. These students especially thrive in science areas.

Our 4th graders enjoy learning about rocks and minerals but our school lacks the resources and materials to support this science unit. We have used pictures in the past to teach about these rocks and minerals.

These students need actual samples to test and experiment with in class. Being able to get their hands on actual rock and mineral samples will make learning about the Moh's hardness scale and other curriculum points much more meaningful. The requested books will also help them identify these samples on their own.

Your help with ensure that my students are able to feel like real geologists and not just a student looking at pictures.

My students need a Rocks and Minerals of the United States set, a Hardness Scale Minerals Collection, a Rocks and Minerals Book and a Rocks and Minerals Activity Book.

Dear An earth scientist, Jessica and Duke Energy - Carolinas,
Thank you so much for funding our "Rock On" project! Our students will have tons of hands-on experiences for our rocks and minerals unit. They are going to be able to see samples up close and be able to test their different properties. At one time we had to share used samples with many other classes, but now our students will have brand new materials to use! They are very excited and can't wait for this unit to begin!!
I can't wait to share these materials with my students!

With gratitude,
Ms. L.

"I gave to this project because I'm a geology grad student, and if my teachers hadn't been able to introduce me to the geosciences in elementary school, I might never have gotten this far! "

"The Earth is a beautiful thing - but it's so hard to see this without samples to touch and examine. Hope there's one more budding scientist who finds inspiration from these supplies."

"The Duke Energy Foundation gave to this project because the students of today will soon become tomorrow's policy and opinion leaders. We therefore want to empower our teachers with math and science-related resources, so they can better teach their students."
