Picture Perfect

My students need a digital camera to make pictures with captions underneath to explain what they are doing in our classroom. Most of my students are four and are just beginning to recognize print. Making connections between the written word and photos will help my students begin to read more quickly.

I teach in a urban school district and most of my students are African American. We are located in a high crime neighborhood. Most of our students are on free and reduced lunch.

We are a Great Expectations School and my students are emerging readers. I recently took pictures of my students acting out the 8 expectations for our classroom. I used the pictures and words to show my students the meaning of each expectation. They loved seeing their own actions and seem to remember the steps better because they were included. One of the pictures shows two students with pom poms raised in the air. The expectation says, "We will cheer each other to success".

It is difficult financially for my to keep buying disposable cameras and having film developed. If I had my own digital camera I could use the computer to print my pictures and share the information quickly with my students.

You would make it possible for my students to connect the written word to photos and I believe this is a key ingredient for my students to want to read.
