I am smiling as I submit this proposal to you because I am imagining the joy, eagerness, and high drama my 6th and 7th grade French students will exhaust when I tell them that we can once again video their performances of the“Natalie et Raoul” French skits. I am a French teacher of 6th and 7th grade students. My students are from the inner-city and face many challenges. But, my students leave those challenges outside my classroom when the camera is rolling and the acting is front stage and center! Alas, the "stage lights" are now out and the set is now quiet because the camera and DVD player are now broken. My students are devastated! And I hope you can help us. Ah, perhaps I should backtrack to tell you the storyline behind these French skits. You'll then understand why the children so love to act them out. The skits are about Raoul, a shy 14 year old student who is smitten with the clueless, but beautiful, Nathalie. This French cartoon series contains romance, note writing, courtship, jealousy, break-ups and make-ups - just what middle school students thrive on! The students must work together in groups of 2 to 5. They must memorize and act out each French script. This project will be ongoing throughout the school year. It is a project that promises fond memories, excitement, diligence and authentic usage of the target language. Students will be driven to learn so that they can perform in front of that camera in the midst of their peers! And, there is nothing that camouflages the difficulty of the French present tense, the imperative, the interrogative and “weird” pronunciations like a little romance, cartoon strips and a video camera/DVD player! My students come programmed with romance and drama; the cartoon strips are ready to go, but, alas, we need a working video camera and DVD player. And that is where I hope you can save the day! An easy to use camcorder player and compatible DVD player would be just what the director (moi!) dreams of for her beloved students. Perhaps you too will smile when you imagine how excited the students will be as they sit down in front of the TV to watch their performances (WITHOUT THE POPCORN!) Thank you most sincerely for your consideration of this request.
