Mrs. Muse Nichols Hills Elementary School
Oklahoma City, OK Grades 3-5

I am the music teacher at my elementary school. As part of the extended fine arts curriculum, I produce 6 grade level musicals each year. This allows me to teach a drama unit with my students. My school is a Great Expectations school that uses the Core Knowledge curriculum. Our teachers focus on teaching to multiple intelligences and subject integration. I am able to do this very effectively through the musical productions.

Although over 30% of the student population at my school receives free or reduced lunches, we have high expectations for academic success. In order to provide our students with the greatest opportunity for success, we have before and after school tutoring as well as recess tutoring. Our students work hard and have very little time during school hours to utilize technology. The laptop computers that were provided by MAPS for Kids are used on occasion for testing, but rarely for creative projects. After watching an animated short on a musical concept, the students became intrigued with the process of animation. I realized that we had most of what we needed to be able to produce this type of programming. The Producing Animated Character project would provide students with the opportunity to learn more about technology while creatively using their academic skills to educate, inform and entertain.

Already included in the music curriculum are the elements necessary to create the animated episodes. I am requesting a digital camera that will enable the students to capture their drawn images for animation. They will then be able to tell a story that demonstrates positive character and socially responsible behavior. The benefits of this program are many, one of the most compelling being that it will enhance the curriculum already in place. The creation of the animated shorts will make use of the fables and storytelling of Core Knowledge, the problem solving and timing of Math, the writing of Language Arts, the themes of Social Studies, the drawing, modeling, and animating used in Art, and the acting and voice talents nurtured in Drama and Music. Students will be able to tape, record, animate, and orchestrate each episode. Supervision will be provided before and after school for students who will add the voicing and do the final editing. No student will be excluded and all students will be able to contribute through regular music class participation.

Being able to use technology to facilitate learning through the curriculum is a highly successful means of not only mediating deficits, but of also changing the way our students use technology. Instead of technology being merely a means of social networking, gaming, and virtual reality, it may become a means of fostering individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities for audiences inside and outside the classroom. In addition, the Producing Animated Character program will provide knowledge products that, through the Internet, have the potential of benefiting students throughout the district, our state, and even our nation.
