"Picture yourself living in a poor, inner city neighborhood, being raised by one parent and experiencing severe challenges in learning. The children in my K-5 special education classes experience these, and more serious, challenges daily. We are a Title 1 school in which 98% of students qualify for free meals. And our North Carolina school district announced in Spring '09 that it is facing the most severe budget challenge in its history.
As more and more students are admitted to special education classes in our school, we find ourselves without the resources needed to diversify instruction for such a wide range of ages and abilities. At the same time, our teacher ranks have been thinned so that the special education staff is having a hard time meeting the very individualized needs of these students.
In order to accommodate the reading and writing goals of all of our exceptional students, we need the structured and independent materials listed in this project. We have the possibility of increasing reading levels by two or more years if we can obtain materials which will help us teach many diverse students at the same time. These materials would enable our students to soar to levels that they only dream of now. And make no mistake; all of our students are poised and ready to fly. We do not have a single student who will waste or devalue these materials.
Your generosity will enable a significant number of students from this school and community to leap into success and carve out a future of contribution and citizenship. Thank you for helping to wipe out the effects of poverty and disability and clear the way for a bright future for our students.
My students need 15 reading and writing materials such as Comprehension and Critical Thinking Activities, a Hamburger Paragraph Chart, and Build a Paragraph Flip Book.

Dear Jim C, Lib Dellinger, In Memory of Virginia McGehee, Helen Jo, Richard, Aaron Fulkerson, Nancy and Jennifer,
How can I begin to thank you for your generosity in donating funds which help our literacy efforts in my classroom? You truly go "over and beyond" in helping students who you do not know with materials you have not seen. Thank you for your trust in me to accurately pinpoint what will assist my students in their efforts to overcome their disabilities and their life circumstances. The reading and writing materials which you helped us purchase have already been used many times and will continue to add to the effectiveness of the resource program at my school.
Every day, now, I watch my students enjoy the reading comprehension lessons on CD and I firmly believe the lessons will assist them in learning to remember and interpret what they have read. It is great fun to watch them use the spelling materials and I have been amazed at how motivated they are to use the materials to memorize every single word. The visual input that the materials add are a great help to students who, typically, do not learn with simple auditory input.
In times when many students do not have what they need to learn life's required skills, generosity like yours gives me hope and optimism.
With gratitude, Dr. M.

Dear Jim C, Lib Dellinger, In Memory of Virginia McGehee, Helen Jo, Richard, Aaron Fulkerson, Nancy and Jennifer,
I am so grateful for people like you and, once my students see the materials you have bought for them, they will be grateful too. My students are sweet souls struggling to keep up with the academic demands placed upon them at such a young age. That you found it in your hearts to want to help my students succeed is a gift that will last them (and me) forever. The materials you helped purchase will help 40 students with learning disabilities, and mental, emotional and medical challenges learn to read faster with better comprehension, and write down their dreams. These gifts mean more than you know. Thank you again for your generosity.

"I gave to this project because I know even great teachers can not teach their best without good teaching tools and children can not learn as much without them.
Why not may it easier and more fun for all."

I hope the network and computer systems are in good shape. It's been many years. "
