I teach a great bunch of fifth grade kids in a "deskless" innovative classroom! I teach math, social studies, and language arts in an inclusion classroom in our Title 1 school. We serve a high risk, high poverty population, and I wouldn't want to teach anywhere else!

My students come from poverty-stricken homes. They bring very few life skills to the classroom. These kids are a joy to teach as they are eager to learn and try new things! The novel my students are reading as a class includes several recipes and cooking "scenes" as part of the storyline. This has sparked a desire in my students to test out their own culinary talents. We're ready to get cooking!

My students and I are fortunate that my husband is able to custom build a portable kitchen for my classroom. This will save a considerable expense and can be enjoyed by my students in the years to come. However, we will need mixing bowls, bakeware, measuring cups, and all the other essentials for a classroom of aspiring chefs. This portable kitchen will enable my students to use their fifth grade math skills in an exciting, real world way. Just as importantly, learning to read recipes and cook will help equip my students with much-needed life skills.

Your help will make our dream kitchen a reality. I feel my students are fortunate in that they are in a truly innovative classroom. We have no desks and rarely use textbooks. Worksheets? NO! These kids are achieving great things by being freed from the book and the desk. The classroom kitchen will take them even further in their "classroom of the future" education by enabling them to experience the real life applications of all those curriculum standards!
