"English Language learners should have books to read also. I teach at a low income school in the inner city. The majority of my students are Mexican American and English is their second language.
There are no books in my class for these students to enjoy. They watch the other students looking at books and being read to in English, but there are no Spanish books for my assistant to read to them. This is unfair to them. They love to be read too.
I need bilingual and Spanish books that my students can relate to. They need to see books in their language, books that can be read to them. My assistant is ready and willing to share the books with them, but we don't have any.
Please make it possible for my students to learn by having books that they can relate to and books that can be read to them in Spanish.
My students need 7 ELL books to give them something that will interest them in reading and 4 Whisperphones to assist them in practice reading.

Dear Kevin Dean, Boyd Family, Michelle, Julie and Lauren,
Thank you again for donating. My students love to go to the reading center more than ever. They love putting on the whisperphone and listening to themselves pretend to read. They pick up book after book and pretend to read. Sometimes they don't have to pretend because they are reading the color, number, shape and alphabet books that were also purchased. These books are in English and Spanish so the students are reading them in both languages. It is a joy to listen to them.
They are also enjoying the puzzles. Unfortunately they all can't use the puzzles all at one time. They tend to wait in line for a chance to work on the puzzles. They love them! They also love saying the colors, numbers and letters of the alphabet when they complete the puzzle. This is helping them to recognize the numbers, colors and alphabet.
I don't want to forget the labeling pictures. The students are able to recognize what is in the different areas by looking at the pictures. This helps them to identify what they are looking for.
Once again thank you for making learning so special for my students!
With gratitude, Mrs. H.

Dear Kevin Dean, Boyd Family, Michelle, Julie and Lauren,
Thank you so much for your kind donation. My ESL students will enjoy reading and using the items that will be purchased for them. This will open up a whole new world for them to have bilingual books to enjoy in the classroom. They will have hours of enjoyment thanks to you. The students also like books to share with their parents because most of their parents can only read Spanish books. This gives their parents an opportunity to come into the classroom and read a book to their child, I can only imagine the smiles that will be on the child and the parents face. Thank you for adding a well deserved smile to a child's life.
Reviewed the project essay and sent follow-up questions if needed.

"I gave to this project because I'm an ESOL teacher too, and when I worked in a high poverty school, generous donors provided my students with books in Spanish and Whisperphones. I know the impact they can make for our students, and I wanted to give back!"

"I gave to this project because my friend Lauren told me about it, and I do bilingual education research, so I know how helpful these materials will be."
