Restaurant Math

My students need calculators, a cash register, and some play food in order to participate in a restaurant math project.

I am a special education resource teacher in elementary school. My students are in 5th grade and I assist them with their learning goals in math. Our school has a large population of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch as well as students with disabilities.

Many of my 5th grade students require a more functional approach to learning math as they struggle with grade-level concepts. Using a more relevant and hands-on approach for teaching motivates them to make connections to real life situations while providing them opportunities to use functional equipment such as a cash register and calculators.

My students will need plastic play food to set up a "diner" in our classroom. Students from a first grade class will make selections based on their "healthy living" unit and my 5th grade students will act as waiters, waitresses and cashiers to take orders, add up tickets, provide change and serve food. We will need a cash register and several calculators in order to add up tickets and provide change.

With your support our students will have a real-life experience to help them achieve curriculum standards in math. It will be fun but also a great learning experience!!
