Little Storymakers (Long Live the Digital Camera)

My students need batteries for a camera to take pictures, and ink to print out the pictures.

I teach Pre-K at an Elementary School. My students are 3, 4 and 5 years old. My students are minority and special needs students so visuals help my students a lot. We are constantly using my digital camera to take pictures of what the students are doing daily, but the problem is we use a lot of batteries for the camera, and a lot of ink to print out the pictures. A picture is worth a thousand words. The students like seeing themselves and their work in print. The students also like taking pictures themselves and printing them out to see and discuss in class. This promotes interaction among the students. The students also make books out of them and share them with their family. They love doing this and sharing it with their families. I often hear my students saying they wish they could take more pictures and print them out, but I find myself denying them because I don't have the ink or the batteries for them.

We usually run out of ink or I don't have batteries for the camera so the students are not able to take the pictures. The students are often more verbal when they see themselves and others in print. They feel more important and will start to talk more which helps them to be a little more social with the other students. This is really important with the ELL students because it helps them to be more verbal in English. It also helps the special need students to be more verbal.

The students would have the ink to print out their pictures so that they could share with their classmates and family. The batteries are needed for the camera to work. This would give my students the opportunity that other students have at other schools. Most of my students are low income so they are not able to take the pictures and print them out at home. Give my students the chance to become more verbal and the chance to become little story tellers. The visuals help a lot.

Most of my students do not have computers at home, so this gives them an opportunity to use the camera and computer at school. I think they should have the opportunity to see themselves in print. This truly lights up their day.
