Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 164 9-12th grade student in a Title One High School. These are students who live in a low socio-economic neighborhood in a small town and rarely leave. My goal is to expose them to interests that will facilitate friendships and family life AND give them lifelong hobbies they can use to bond with their children. GAME DAY perfect for both goals!

We do not live near an Interstate; the entertainment in this town is one multi-screen movie theater, a small Mall, and 2-3 game centers. As a result, my students often amuse themselves with computer activities and video games. We have high pregnancy rates, massive drug abuse and more the fair share of domestic violence. Most jobs are minimum wage. We need alternate interests, hobbies, and a desire to be entertained without the use of substances and technology!

Board Games are easy and fun to play. We conduct Game Day 2 times a year for 2 days each. Once the students learn the games, they remain available for play before school, after school and during lunch. We have seen students put down their MP3 players and actually talk to the person they are playing against and the people watching them play! My students will have an activity they can enjoy as an individual and a fun task to enjoy with their families. They will understand that fun can be as simple as a game of Sorry or Uno!

We were told that our students have to “power down” to come to school. We do not allow cell phones, MP3 players in the classroom or networked computer games. As adults, we know the value of a quiet, peaceful time with family and friends. My students do not know this pleasure. They have grown up in a world where they talk to their friend on My Space and Face book. Together, we can change this situation and bring back the required socialization skills our society depends on to function! Reading (instructions), conversations (with opponents), manners (as we take turns), negotiation (as scores and points are discussed) are some of the skills we can instill. Help me with this small dream!
