21st Century Success

My students need 2 Leapsters, a carrying case, and educational games.

Mr. Airhart Emerson Elementary School
Salt Lake City, UT Grades PreK-2

I am in my fourth year of teaching and just love it more and more each year. I teach in the 6th grade. Most of my students, bless their hearts, receive free lunch and don't have much in terms of what home life has to offer.

Each year I give my students the opportunity to tutor the young kids in the kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. They do reading activities, art, and simple math. The obstacle is that the supplies my students use are pretty used and out-dated and it is getting difficult to keep these young students motivated. As a 21 century student, the use of technology in learning is highly motivating.

Now, what I can see happening is that when my 6th grade tutors meet with their k-2 grade pupils, these two leapsters and the 4 educational games will be a powerful instrument in teaching kids to read, write, and problem solve. Currently, my sixth graders are reading weekly with the 1st graders. They discuss the book and work on reading comprehension. With the leapster, my sixth graders will be able to use the leapster to aid in the lesson. The leapster is full of reading comprehension activities, and many other types of language arts activities, that will only further assist and reach out to every type of learner. Studies show that students need multiple learning experiences to feel comfortable with the new ideas they are learning. The sixth graders will also use the math activities as they tutor the second graders. There are games on every math topic that give these students an extra push in the direction of understanding. I feel that these leapsters are a step in the right direction for meeting the AYP requirements set by the federal government that detail the seriousness that no child be left behind.

Technology is becoming a crucial and essential part of learning. Schools all over the state are pumping more and more resources into technology. By starting these kids and familiarizing them in the crucial younger years of life, they will be a step ahead in the later years of learning.
