Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach all subjects in a first grade family. Our school is located in a very low-income, high-need community in North Carolina. I use the word family because sometimes school is the only place where my students receive a hug, love, or any attention at all, because mom and dad are having to work 2 and 3 jobs to make ends meet. We are a Title 1 school with 89% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. I have 20 students in my classroom. Out of those 20 students, 16 are Hispanic, 3 are white and 1 is Bi-racial. Our school focuses on ensuring that our English Language Learners are successful in school and life.

Sixty percent of the kids in my classroom are English Language Learners. Computers provide endless resources to help them acquire and use the English Language by making meaningful connections and personal experiences. There are many learning opportunities on the Internet or through educational games. However, our two current classroom computers are 11 years old. We never know if they will work on any given day. I am only a third year teacher. I do not have the financial ability yet to fix or replace something of such magnitude. Most of my students do not have the money to have a computer in their homes. School is the only opportunity they get to learn about and use one of this world's most important tools.

If my classroom received these 2 new computers, it would benefit all levels of students in my classroom during literacy centers and classroom activities. For my English Language Learners they could use the Rosetta Stone program, Starfall website, and a variety of different language CD-ROMs to acquire language skills. Many of my students can speak English well, but do not have confidence in their abilities. New computers would help them practice their English in a non-threatening environment to give them confidence in themselves. We currently have two computers that are 11 years old. Only one can connect to the Internet and the other one can play CD-ROMs about 50% of the time. This makes using the computers very difficult because we can never count on them to be working for any given lesson. I would love to let my high-achieving students do book club projects or reports using the Internet, but with the inconsistency of our computers this is impossible. Also, as I stated before, most of our children do not have computers at home. School is the only place for them to develop this very valuable skill.

Your heart and generosity would make it possible for a group of students that the world doesn't expect to accomplish anything, be successful and even excel in school and life. Confidence in yourself and your abilities starts early. It also starts with consistency. With new computers from your contribution my first grade family could have supplemental activities that we could rely on to be available! We live in a technology-driven world. You could make it possible for my students to drive into the future with knowledge, essential skills, and above all, self-worth and confidence!
