My students are bright, energetic, and inquisitive; they are highly-motivated and self-confident. They want to understand the world and their place in it.
My students are thirsty for knowledge about the world. They have many questions about political and social situations, in both the United States and the world at large. None of them get the local newspaper or national magazines at home. They are eager to discuss and debate the issues I bring up in class--environmental policy, free and fair elections, high-stakes testing, the list literally goes on and on! Several years ago our school had money to purchase subscriptions of "Time for Kids" for our students. Each student received his or her own magazine each week. The week's homework was centered around the current events and ethical issues presented in the articles. Both my students and their families appreciated and learned from the assignments. I envision using "Time for Kids" in a similar manner this year. We'll read from it as a class, as well as independently. Students will share the articles with their families. We will debate and discuss an ethical issue every week. I also intend to use the magazines as samples of informational text. Students will use the articles as models for how writers present information and construct their arguments. Potential donors, your contribution will absolutely impact the lives of every one of my students, on a daily basis. The kids in my room are the potential leaders in our community. They have the intellectual capacity to do anything they choose, yet their lives are very centered in the day to day struggles of the urban poor. Help them see the world beyond their urban jungle, so they can begin to envision their place in it. My students need a years subscription to the weekly current events magazine, Time for Kids.
The cost of this proposal is $258, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment Live Updates
