"I teach High School English and Social Justice in a middle/high school serving approximately 65 percent free and reduced lunch-qualified students and 70 percent students of color. Oppression and discrimination are familiar concepts to many of my students. Systemic, as well as individual racism, classism and sexism are challenges my students face on a daily basis. Simply getting to school in the midst of family issues, economic stress and prior negative school experiences is a huge mountain they climb everyday.

Connecting students’ lives to classroom-based text can be a challenging task. Often, students have a difficult time engaging with text because the people and situations often don’t seem familiar. Students who have traditionally been under-served in our society have an even more difficult time. Purchasing 20 copies of "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity" is an important way for my students to connect their own stories to experiences of women and girls worldwide. District budget challenges have made the purchase of this recently-published text difficult.

As a teacher of literature, one of my primary responsibilities is developing the connection between text and students' lives. Students in my classes at an all-girls public school will connect to the stories in "Half the Sky" because they have also experienced challenges. Their own stories will be shared throughout the unit as we read and write about how the stories in the book affect each of us.

In their book, Kristof and WuDunn have illustrated the challenges women and girls face throughout the world. By funding 20 copies of "Half the Sky", you will help students connect their own stories to the stories of the women in the book. My students will find inspiration to continue pursuing their dreams – despite tremendous odds - by reading about how others have done the same.

My students need 20 copies of "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity" by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.

Dear Kim, charmaine, Ryan and Anonymous Donors,
Our class is grateful for your generous contribution to this project. We are very excited to begin reading "Half the Sky" and look forward to the connections we make and important conversations we have throughout this unit of study.

In reading Kristoff and WuDunn's book, our hearts and minds will be forever changed. This year, our class has made a commitment to work in support of the rights of women and children; your donation will provide an important first step: high-quality, thoughtful, and educational reading.

With gratitude,
Ms. S.

"The value of education through traditional means is great; but the value of education through a social justice lens is even greater. Kudos to Ms. S for her work and kudos to the students for striving to become social-consicous aware leaders in our society."
