Music and the "Keys" to Success The sound of music. It can inspire. It can motivate. It can empower. I see the power of music everyday, working with my second grade students in Florida. I actually used music during science to teach my students the states of matter. Sometimes I still hear them singing it. My school is 85% free or reduced lunch. The children at my school don't have a lot of good things to sing about, but they arrive everyday, some smiling, some tired from the morning bus ride, but ready to work.

I have only been at this school for a few months, but upon taking my students to music class one day, the stark reality of tough economic times became crystal clear. When I was young, music class meant hearing the sounds of instruments: woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings. Unfortunately, the only sounds I heard were of marching feet as they took their seats in a room with one piano -the one the music teacher solely used to teach music concepts. I asked if the students had instruments to play. The music teacher replied that they did last year, but due to funding, they lost their only set of violins. As I left, I wondered what would Alicia Keys be doing now if her mother hadn't signed her up for music lessons. Would she still be in Hell's Kitchen? Then I wondered if the next Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, or Chopin was walking the hallways of my school, craving an outlet to express themselves, to truly be free. Then I had an epiphany. Maybe music instruction, through the piano or otherwise, could be the key to success for some of the students at my school.

My brainchild is simple: to supply keyboards to students who desire to learn piano. I believe this will not only give them a creative outlet to express their feelings, but it may help them further their educational goals. According to a 2001 article in The College Board, titled Profiles of SAT and Achievement Test-Takers, "College Bound Seniors with school music experience scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of their SATs and 41 points higher in math than those without arts instruction." German researchers also found that childhood music lessons enlarge portions of the brain (Nature, April 23, 1998). With evidence like this, I believe allowing students the chance to learn music is a step in the right direction.

Now, very gracious donors, you have the opportunity to make magic happen in the lives of children. By supplying instruments to students who by any other means may never learn music, you are giving these a students a gift that can last a lifetime, and enlighten the world. So, just like music, you are the key. Let's make it happen!
