This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 25 eager 3rd grade students in a suburban setting in Illinois. Over 80% of our students come from low income homes. Grant money replaced our dank and dingy 80-year-old building 5 years ago with a bright, airy, updated facility, but little money was left for new furniture.
Many of my students come from homes without literacy materials, either through lack of interest or lack of funds. They love hanging out in our classroom library area. The library is well stocked with books purchased from garage sales and clearance counters, handed down from other avid readers, or redeemed from book club bonus points, but the tile floor is not exactly warm and inviting.
Encouraging leisure-time reading is a goal of our school, as I am sure it is in every school. We have a substantial need for 2 bean bag chairs and a small area rug so students have a more comfortable area in which to read.
Your help will go a long way toward encouraging my students to view reading a great book as an activity as worthy of their free time as cuddling up with the remote control or the joy stick.
