Completed: Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Skies are Blue...

It's true-the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true. As a little girl I watched Dorothy sing about her dreams countless times. Every time she sang with her beautiful, velvety voice I was taken away to a far off place, a land where there was no such thing as troubles. Seeing, hearing and knowing about my students' daily life struggles makes me want to take them away with me over the rainbow. The majority of our students come from a working/poverty class. This results in over half of our school using the free and reduced lunch program. I know my students are not limited by these things, so this year I am encouraging them to set goals and have dreams for their lives. It's unfortunate to hear a child say he has dreams of going to college one day, but knows he may not have the money to afford it. :( But, it's beautiful to encourage him to work hard and earn scholarships to make his dream come true! He may even want to become a music teacher like me one day!

As a first year teacher in Elementary Music, I have big dreams too! I dream of filling my classroom with the equipment necessary for my students to express themselves freely. Music is such a release. I truly believe that, for some of my students, my music room is over the rainbow.

Children learn in such a kinesthetic way. I can only talk about the technique and sound of instruments so many times. The kids must experience music, especially since this is an outlet for a lot of them. I would LOVE to have a set of Remo Kids Rain Forest Percussion including: 1 Tubano drum, 1 Bong drum, and 1 Djembe. I'm also asking for 1 Mini Steel Drums set for our "Musical Cultural Travel Around the World". It would be so great to see their faces as we pretend to be on a beach somewhere! Lastly, I'm asking for a small set of shape drums- these are perfect for teaching across the curriculum with my youngsters. With these things, my students are sure to have an unforgettable musical experience. Through the art of music, my students will learn to express themselves and believe in their dreams.

If I walked into my classroom tomorrow and found this new set of percussion instruments, my dreams would have come true. My kids would walk in and be able to freely express themselves in a way they never have before. I am setting my heart to this just as I have taught my students to do. They would get to see that dreams really do come true. What a beautiful picture that would be.

My students need 1 Kids Percussion Rain Forest Tubano, 1 Kids Percussion Rain Forest Bongos, 1 Kids Rain Forest Djembe, 1 Mini Steel Pan in G Major, and one set of Sound Shapes Package.

Dear Michael,
Wow! I am sitting here speechless. Your kindness and generosity brings me such great joy! This new set of percussion instruments is JUST what my music classroom needs. Each and every instrument WILL be used in a huge way to enhance student learning.
Here is the most ironic thing: just last week I used a storybook in my classroom about a little girl who has two sticks. She beats on everything with her 2 sticks, but all she really wants the whole time is a real steel drum. At the end of the book she ends up getting a 'steel drum' just like the one you have purchased for our class room! What a neat addition to this lesson- this will make the lesson!
My students do not have much, so they are VERY appreciative of what is given to them. I cannot wait to let them know about your thoughtfulness. I know they will be just as thrilled as I am. I am a firm believer that children learn through physical engagement. Now, I can not only read about the steel drum and play a recording, but the students will actually be able to create melodies themselves! This is truly an experience they will never forget! Each time I hear my students create beautiful music, my face will light up and I will think of you.

With gratitude,
Mrs. K.

"I gave to this project because music education teaches much more than simply making music. Cultural history and appreciation and successful group dynamics are only two examples of the importance of what you are doing for your students."
