My classroom is a mixed-age group of kindergarten and first grade students. Since our school is a public charter elementary school, our students are enrolled through an open lottery process and come from all parts of the city. To ensure that ALL my students become proficient readers and writers, I use a structure called Story Workshop to nurture language development and literacy through the arts and sciences. I’ve discovered that if young children are given opportunities to express their ideas using a variety of interesting materials that engage their senses, they thrive and their literacy skills jump by leaps and bounds.

Story Workshop invites students to create stories from their real or imaginary lives that are inspired by a variety of art media including paint, potters clay, wire, watercolor, sculpy clay, blocks, drawing, and natural materials to name a few. A favorite art media for many of my students when telling their stories is paint. They often surprise themselves by discovering new, powerful language that they hadn’t considered before as they paint. Therefore, painting is a critical piece of Story Workshop and each time a child is able to tell his or her story using a different medium, it becomes a richer more powerful story. After the author receives feedback from classmates, makes revisions and is satisfied with the results, the student publishes the story and places it in our classroom library for the enjoyment of all the class. The results of this approach are very satisfying for my students, our parents and me. We’ve discovered that young children can write interesting, engaging, and powerful stories that are enjoyed by readers of all ages.

I find that using quality materials to support this kind of language and story development is key. It is essential to the development of their ideas that the children have quality brushes that can really show the detail of their thinking as they tell their story through the language of paint.

The specific quality paint brushes we use that enable the children to show such detail in their paintings continues to be a stretch for my classroom budget. The paint brushes we receive will keep our classroom alive with rich metaphors, images and language to nurture literacy development.
