I teach General Music to 475 students, ranging from K-5th grade. We are an arts integrated school, using the fine arts not only in our specialty areas, but in the core classrooms too.

At present, we do not have any instruments from other cultures. Yet our curriculum is full of examples (listening to Cds) of instruments from around the world, especially African drums. We use what we have (variety of handheld rhythm instruments) to learn to keep the beat and experiment with creating our own rhythms.

The addition of these drums will greatly increase the engagement of our students in the learning process. I took a class this summer on African drumming and could see the benefits of having the actual instruments in class to use. The authenticity of the instruments will be a catalyst for creative thinking and a great motivator for engagement in the classroom.
