Shhh! Whisper! Readers at Work!

"I teach a first grade class at an urban school which serves a diverse population, both economically and ethnically.

When my students read independently, they read out-loud which is normal for new readers. They try to use "whisper" voices, but inevitably the noise level creeps up and up until I can't hear the children that I am trying to work with. This causes me to resort to the overused, "Shhhh!"

The students overhear each other reading and this is distracting for 6 year olds! These phones will buffer the sounds coming from other students and help them remain focused.

This style phone is 'hands-free" and will enable the children to hold the book securely and turn pages as needed.

When you add my English as Second language students including those who speak Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, French-Wolof (language derived from Nigeria and the Congo) and Spanish to the mix, it compounds the problem. Our quiet reading time becomes a veritable cacophony.

I would like for my students to have Whisperphones which would enable them to have their voices directed back to their own ears. It will help lower the noise level of the room substantially, but also help the students to focus on their reading skills. They will be able to hear themselves as they attempt to phonetically decode words and and stretch the sounds. The phones will also be used during writing workshop to help the students hear the sounds they are producing as they attempt to spell words phonetically.

It is my hope that the ESL students will benefit even more from being able to hear and distinguish sounds more clearly.

Your support of this project will not only help with noise levels, but assist the students to "help themselves" as they practice their reading and writing strategies. It will provide a more conducive atmosphere for learning and will make it possible for me to deliver more effective instruction.

Your help will make a tremendous difference in these young readers' progress and I can use the phones year after year! It will keep me from uttering, "Shhhh!" many times a day, too.

My students need 24 Whisperphones to assist them during our read-to-self rotations.
